MEMBER TO REMEMBER
O
ne of the best parts of my job is
meeting innovative, energetic and
inspirational people. After eight
years as a partner at Deloitte I left the cor-
porate world to start two companies. I now
help women build profitable businesses.
I also love seeing my clients build home-
based businesses to be genuine financial
alternatives to paid employment.
Worst job I ever had was when I was
a cook's assistant in a hunting lodge in
Northern Scotland. The cook was an old
school friend and I was a uni student with
no money and a summer holiday to fill.
Karen promised good pay, short hours and
a hearty social life. I leapt at it.
It wasn't until we arrived at the isolated
windy castle that I found out what a cook's
assistant actually did: skin rabbits, bone
sheep, gut fish, pluck pheasants and boil
deer heads. Not such a good fit for some-
one who faints at the sight of blood.
The business people I find most amazing
are those who have had the vision to create
something we didn't even know we needed.
I think of Henry Ford and his democratisa-
tion of the motor vehicle; Bill Gates and his
vision of a computer on every desk and in
every home; and Steve Jobs and the iPod.
My all time inspiration is Anita Roddick,
founder of The Body Shop. Thirty years
ago people thought this lady who sold
beauty products that hadn't been tested on
animals and espoused Fair Trade was mad,
and look what she achieved.
If money were no object I would still pur-
sue my vision of helping kitchen table ty-
coons but I'd get there faster by employing
more people and building great products.
My husband and I would also sign our
children (three boys aged 7, 6 and 4) out of
school for a year and take them around the
world. We'd spend time in India helping
out at the Bala Gurukulam orphanage and
would champion fundraising for it when we
returned home.
I would also indulge my love of shopping
and hire, for my sanity, a housekeeper.
My favourite Business Chicks moment
was the brekky with Napoleon Perdis. I
could never get my head around how he
came to be in the cosmetics business and
when he talked about how his parents
couldn't either I laughed so hard there
were tears. I remember leaving the event
feeling so energized a real emotional high
that carried me through a tricky day.
