THE HARD QUESTION
1 MILLION WOMEN
is a new campaign of daughters, moth-
ers, sisters and grandmothers inspiring climate action. It aims
to recruit 1 million women across the country to take action on
climate change and collectively stop a minimum of 1 million
tonnes of CO2 pollution from entering the atmosphere. This is
the equivalent of taking 250,000 cars off the road for 12 months
- enough pollution to fill 2.1 billion wheelie bins or 20 billion
balloons. Every woman that joins makes a commitment to cut a
minimum of 1 tonne from her daily life in a year.
1 Million Women addresses this common issue of "disen-
gagement" by providing women with access to activities which
they can implement in their daily lives to reduce their negative
impact on the environment.
"Recruiting 1 million women means that we have to engage
one in every eight adult women living in Australia," said Natalie
Isaacs the campaign founder. "This campaign has to cross nu-
merous boundaries to reach communities of women from all
walks of life."
START REDUCING TODAY:.
The activity centre on the 1MW campaign website
www.1millionwomen.com.au offers dozens of activity choices
- across the six key areas for reducing pollution - to get your 1
tonne. You will also be able to track your progress.
ACTIVITY EXAMPLES TO CUT YOUR TONNE.
Apart from big-ticket items like getting solar hot water,
getting rid of your car, or buying 100% Green Power, there
are many smaller items that can help the planet and save you
money too. Here are four things you can do that will add up to
at least 1 tonne of CO2 cuts over a year.
1.
Cut back on red meat.
By managing your weekly
diet to include lots of cereals, fruits and vegetables, and
cutting out one 150g red meat meal a week, you can save
approx. 195kg of CO2 in a year.
2.
Turn down the air heating and cooling.
Heating
and cooling our homes has a major impact on household
emissions. By dressing for the season and weather, and
using less heating and air-conditioning, we can make real
dollar savings too and cut 600kg of CO2 a year for a
three bedroom home.
3.
Get the recycling habit.
Recycle everything you
can. Anything made from metal, wood, most plastics,
paper and cardboard, and electronic e-waste are all likely
to have a recycling option. Even for one person recycling
constantly can cut 200kg of CO2 a year.
4.
Ditch the second fridge.
Dispose of your extra
fridge, or run it only when you really need to, and save
up to 250kg of CO2 pollution a year.
ITS EASY'
Once you get started you'll be amazed how easy it is to make
significant behavioural changes that reduce CO2 pollution
without diminishing your quality of life.
