mployees who worked the hardest and
showed the most technical competence
once could expect to earn the most money.
But times have changed, and the rules for
earning what you're worth have changed, too. Author
of
The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance and leading
US behavioural scientist Shannon L. Goodson gives
us her five tips to securing a pay rise.
Reflect your glory
If you want to earn what you're worth, make sure your
good work gets noticed. One of the most effective things
you can do to elevate your visibility is network within your
own company. Be sure influential people in your company,
as well as your peers and colleagues in other departments,
know who you are and what you do. Shine the light on your
work if you don't, no-one else will.
Walking the fine line
As you promote yourself on the road to a pay rise, find
tasteful, ethical ways to present yourself and your work.
Your action plan for greater visibility should be forthright
and honourable but must not make you appear to be
fawning, boasting or a self-interested bore.
Keep your great expectations realistic
Do your homework. Check newspapers, internet and
social networks to see what your skills and abilities
are worth in today's marketplace. Find out what other
people in similar positions with similar experience are
getting paid. Then, armed with the facts, your case will
appear much stronger when the time comes to ask for a
pay rise.
Don't blow your top or the deal
When you are ready to make your case for that pay rise,
don't go in with guns blazing. Keep reason at the forefront.
A calm, reasonable, thoughtful request for a pay rise
will carry a great deal more weight than a shrill, heated
demand. Stick to the facts that you have gathered and
leave irrationality and emotions on the doorstep.
Ask and you might receive
There is one other very important thing that must be
remembered when you're trying to secure a pay rise. It's
probably the most obvious and, at the same time, the most
overlooked. A library full of facts and endless hours of
preparation and networking will all go to waste without
taking the final half step ASK FOR IT!
