From career into
I
'm sitting here, my head filled with work, my
heart filled with expectation, and my belly filled
with baby. I'm full term in my first pregnancy
and although I'm so excited to be bringing our lit-
tle bundle of joy into the world, I'm also challenged
by what's around the corner. I'm trying my best to
wrap up my work and get prepared for the imminent
arrival, and learning a lot about separating the two
along the way.
I've been running my own businesses now for over
ten years and my career has always been a huge
priority for me. I've pulled all-nighters, worked two
days straight on various occasions, propped myself
up with caffeine, checked emails at 4am, and led
the life of a somewhat obsessive workaholic. Look-
ing back, I've always known this day would come
the day when I'd temporarily exit my businesses,
handing the reigns to my team, and doing my best
not to think about it while I try and focus on what's
coming next.
One of my friends had a great idea when she was
preparing to enter into the world of motherhood.
She eased out of her hectic work life by going part
time before her official maternity leave started. She
said that this was a great way for her colleagues to
get used to her not being there and learning how
to cope without her. It also gave her the chance to
wind down and get used to the new found lifestyle
of being a mum to a newborn and the challenges
that brought. She found she was less stressed and
more relaxed, and this lead to a happier and more
settled baby.
For ambitious and career driven women, the time to say
goodbye to your work and office as you leap into the journey of
motherhood can be daunting, as Emma Isaacs reveals.
