onsider the luxurious splendour of a
Bentley, the brazen bravado of a Lam-
borghini or the breathtaking looks of a
Ferrari. Such cars need no introduction. They
command long, envious looks, and guarantee
to get your heart racing.
In some cases this fascination may more
simply be a salute to the dollar value that
such vehicles demand. You can pick up the
new Bentley Arnage Azure for $684,100 -
which does include diamond shaped quilted
leather seats and doors, reminiscent of a
classic Channel clutch. Or the more budget
conscious shopper might settle for the new
Porsche 911 Carrera 4S which will set you
back $265,200.
Any seasoned shopper will have pulled
out the cost per year equation to justify
an arguably extravagant purchase. Apply-
ing this same equation to some cars, how-
ever, simply highlights the obscene amount
of money you can drop on some beautiful
metal. For example, if you drove the Por-
sche 911 Carrera 4S every day for year, that
would equate to around $720 per day-not
including on road costs and petrol!!. On the
flipside, you could get the train for about
$6, while wearing a new pair of Italian shoes
every day and come out even. So where's
the sense in that, you may ask? These cars
wear a deeply coveted badge it's an emo-
tional connection with a superior product.
If you aspire to experience the ultimate in
design, power, technology, performance
and handling, you'll pay for it.
Whether or not you can afford a super-
expensive prestige car, or a steady supply of
new Italian shoes, there's still a certain joy
in checking out the goods. It's like window
shopping. And what's not to love about some
totally over the top motoring?
Ferrari California. Possibly the most beau-
tiful car on the market, this is the first Ferrari
to have a folding hard top. The 4.3 litre V8 en-
gine transports its four passengers with a sexy
style like no other. Shifting from 0-100km in
under four seconds and a top speed in excess
of 310 km/h, this car is deserving of true su-
per car status. The California goes on sale in
Australia in 2009 for around $450,000.
Audi R8. Rising to the challenge, the Audi
R8 is quite a head turner. The muscular body
and aggressive styling gives this car a seri-
ously menacing look. And the smell of soft
Nappa leather that fills the cabin hints to the
level of luxurious finish the R8 offers. The
R8's 4.2 litre V8 engine delivers 0-100km/h
in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 300km/h.
Available now, pricing for the Audi R8 starts
from $277,196.
Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. The Porsche is,
undeniably, a style icon. Less ostentatious
than a Ferrari and more approachable than
the R8, the classic 911 continues to maintain
its allure, more than 40 years after it was first
introduced. With equally impressive perform-
ance credentials, this car's 3.8 litre engine
catapults you from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 sec-
onds and will set you back $265,200.
