On the Juice
O
ver 2000 years ago, Egyptian wom-
en used to paint their skin with
crushed minerals, however things
have come a long way since then and min-
eral makeup is now becoming common
place on the counters.
Your fi rst trick is to bravely put away
the heavy cream based foundation, and
give mineral makeup a try. Then it's im-
portant to understand the ingredients.
True mineral makeup does not contain
talc, oils, synthetic preservatives, syn-
thetic fi llers, synthetic dyes, fragrances
or waxes. A pure mineral makeup should
always be in a loose powdered form which
is indicative of being free from waxes,
oils and fi llers.
However, there are many brands on the
market that claim to be 'mineral makeup'
and have the powdered texture. To ensure
you're choosing a good quality product it is
advisable to look at the ingredients listing.
The winning ingredients in good quality
mineral makeup include mica, iron oxide,
zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
As for staying power, when applied
properly mineral makeup doesn't dissolve
in oil or water, so once applied it seldom
requires touch ups and won't slide off your
skin on a hot day.
Preparation
Let your moisturiser sink in for at least 10
minutes. Don't use too much moisturiser
as you want the make-up to blend into the
skin. Primers are also good for getting the
perfect canvas.

Application tips
bareMinerals suggest the `swirl, tap and buff'
for the perfect application. Starting with a
small amount in the lid of the jar, then;
Swirl the makeup in the lid with the brush
until all the minerals are tucked into the bristles.
Tap away excess. There should not be any
powder visible on the outside of the brush.
Buff the brush onto the skin in a circular motion,
starting on the outside of your face near your
cheekbone and swirling as you go.
Buff until
you are satisfi ed with the coverage.
Less is more. Aim to do three light passes
with the product over the entire face building up
the coverage.
Mineral Makeup
Mineral makeup seems to have come out of
nowhere, and now seems to be everywhere.
Felicity Andrews demystifies the makeup.
