On the Juice
W
ho has time (or the inclination)
to eat 10 carrots? Well, that's
what goes into one glass of car-
rot juice. Juicing is an easy way to incor-
porate more fruit and vegetables into your
day. The liquid offers the same amount of
nutrients, but in a much more concen-
trated volume when compared with fresh
produce.
By adding supplements and herbs to
your juices, you can enhance the healing,
energizing and nourishing powers of your
intake. This allows you to tailor your juicing
to the needs of your body and your health.
The trick is working out what each herb
and supplement has to add to your day.
Most juice bars have spirulina on their
menus. It helps strengthen and purify the
blood, detoxifies the kidneys and liver and
helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Spir-
ulina is also an excellent source of beta-
carotene, iron, essential fatty acids, B-
complex vitamins, chlorophyll, minerals
and trace elements. Spirulina is certainly
worth considering adding to your favour-
ite juice.
Adding fresh herbs and spices to your
juice can have potent medicinal properties
and therapeutic effects on both your mind
and your body. Juiced herbs and spices
can be quite pungent so blend them in
with a suitable fruit and vegetable combi-
nation to make them more palatable and
go easy on the quantities. Here are a few
herbs and spices to get you started:
·Cayenne: Rich in pro vitamin A and
vitamin C to boost the immune system.
Helps lower blood pressure and
cholesterol.
·Cinnamon: Antifungal and antiviral.
Helps alleviate cold and flu symptoms.
·Cumin: Can provide relief from
menstrual and muscle cramping.
·Ginger: Aids conditions such as
coughs, colds, nausea, constipation
and poor circulation. Strengthens the
digestive system and boosts immunity.
·Mint: Reduces odours in the colon and
stomach, and aids digestion.
· Rosemary: Rich in antioxidants and
chlorophyll, acts as an antiseptic to
combat bacteria and viruses in the body.

Liquid nutrients are easier to digest and absorb, hence have a better
bio-availability. Louise Elder explains an easy way to top up your energy.

a bit of pep up in the morning, it will
give you all the energy you need for a
busy morning ahead. Blend
8 medium carrots
3 Apples
1 pinch of Ginger
Make sure you wash your apples
thoroughly in warm water if they have
been commercially grown to remove any
wax layer that may have been applied to
them to preserve their shelf life. The Ginger
will help boost your blood circulation and
also gives a nice edge to the juice flavour.
