visit to Paris where she found a book of children's portraits by 17th century Dutch and Flemish masters. The artist was inspired by the stark solidity and unsentimental treatment of children in the portraits. She returned to Australia determined to incorporate their muted, cool tones in her work, but alongside a distinctively Australian sensibility. Sophie's 5 year old daughter, Isadora often plays muse and model in her works, but the paintings are not one child's story but the universal experience of childhood, defined by peach-faced innocence and simple pleasures. Holland was a rock star.
