Baby Girls Tend to Skip Breakfast:
According to
Oxford University, women on low-calorie diets or
who skip breakfast at the time of conception are
more likely to give birth to girls. This is the first
evidence that a child's sex is associated with the
mother's diet, and higher energy intake is linked to
males. Although sex is genetically determined by
fathers, scientists know from in vitro fertilisation
research that higher levels of glucose encourage the
growth and development of male embryos while
inhibiting female embryos.
She's a Tough Mother:
According to the University
of Richmond, motherhood causes neurological
changes that make females braver, faster and less
stressed. The study revealed all female mammals
change some of their critical behaviours after giving
birth. These are normally behaviours that are linked
to a mother's ability to care and protect her offspring.
Old Fashioned Brushing:
Old-fashioned
toothbrushes are just as good as electric ones at
reducing plaque and gum disease, a U.K. review in
the Journal of Dentistry has found. The only
electric toothbrushes better than manual
toothbrushes at reducing both plaque and gum
disease were rotational oscillation brushes, and
even then, only by 11 per cent. So if you buy
manual brushes, you can almost justify spending
more money on shoes!
Switch Off to Switch Off:
Radiation from mobile
phones stimulates brain activity in the early stages
of sleep even after you've finished using the phone, a
Brain Sciences Institute study shows. The study
found that exposure to electromagnetic radiation
from mobile phones can reduce levels of the
hormone melatonin, which is connected to the
body's sleep-wake cycle.
