A
venue Q, written by Jeff Whitty, with music by Robert
Lopez and lyrics by Jeff Marx, first debuted in 2002 with
an off Broadway run. The show went on to beat favourite
WICKED to win three of the top Tony Awards in 2004: Best Musi-
cal, Best Original Score of a Musical and Best Book of a Musical.
Touted as `where Sesame Street meets South Park' Avenue Q is
not the most upmarket of New York streets, and is about as far
away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some
lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic
alliance of humans and puppets. For those weaned on Sesame
Street, the Avenue Q puppets may look familiar however this
send up of political correctness isn't for the kiddies.
National Tour of all capital cities.
Commences in Melbourne from June 4th, Comedy Theatre
Bookings 1300 795 012 or www.avenueqthemusical.com.au
Realism, a backstage farce set
in 1930s Moscow and winner
of the Wal Cherry Award for
Best New Play, will open this
month at the MTC Theatre in
Melbourne, starring Miriam
Margolyes and directed by MTC Associate Director Peter Evans.
Set just after Stalin's error purges, it follows a company of actors
as they begin rehearsals of a new play to commemorate the leader's
60th birthday. The old showbiz maxim `the show must go on!' is an
order they can't refuse. A comedy of nerves, Realism is about the
spirit that makes art live and the forces that want to crush it.
MTC Sumner Theatre, 4th April to May 17th. Bookings MTC

Mishka
Above the Bones
Mishka spent most of his early life on a boat in the
Caribbean. A child of the islands, it was almost
inevitable that he'd be drawn to reggae. Mishka's
varied musical interests are evident on this, his third
album but his vocals may be the most captivating
element of the album. His striking tenor is mellow
and intense with a bluesy quality that gives every
word an aching intensity.
Phrase
Clockwork
Forget what you knew about Phrase. His acclaimed
APRA and ARIA nominated debut album, Talk With
Force, was yesterday. Clockwork is not only about
the now. It's about the next. The track Back To The
Street retraces his steps to success and hip-hop
factions. All Good is an honest portrait of life on the
suburban fringe, a kid with no-name brand runners
and a rap dream. Released April 24th
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
It's Blitz!
It's Blitz signals both a glance backward and a step
forward for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The first single,
"Zero," creates a dance-floor anthem that sings
directly to the listener. "We've got a death grip on
the adolescent way of feeling things," vocalist Karen
O said. "That's something I'll never be able to shake
in the music I write. It's almost feels like a John
Hughes 80s movie."
